Publication settings and layout options are only available through the web.
To access your publication settings page:
- Go to your publication homepage.
- Click on the Manage publication menu.
- Under Settings, click Info & Homepage.
On the settings page, you have access to two different tabs: Info and Homepage.
Info tab
In the Info tab, you can edit all the details associated with your publication
General
In the General section, you can edit your publication's name, description, and avatar. All these items are required.
The publication name and avatar are displayed on your publication homepage, sidebar, and in previews of your content throughout the site. They will also be used on the homepage header.
To change your publication avatar, click Change image.
The description is a quick way to tell readers about your publication. It has a maximum of 280 characters and appears on search results and publication previews.
Social & Topics
You can add links to your social media accounts and email address. All these items are public. The social media accounts will be shown on the publication's about page, and the email will be used for the Newsletters.
You can also add up to 5 topics to your publication. These allow people to search for and discover your publication.
People
In the people section, you can manage your publication staff.
There are two levels of permissions in publications:
- Editors can review, edit, and publish their own stories and those submitted by writers.
- Writers can submit stories and drafts to the publication.
Adding and removing editors and writers
To add a new member, click on Add an editor or Add a writer, type in their username, and select them from the drop-down list. To remove writers and editors from your publication, click on the cross icon next to their usernames. Be sure to click Save to confirm your changes.
To see the full list of editors and writers in your publication, you can just scroll through the list, or go to your publication's About page by clicking the link in the navigation.

Custom domain
Publications can also have their own custom domain. Learn more about custom domains.
Homepage tab
The homepage serves as the landing page of your publication and can be customized with various options to highlight the stories added to the publication.
To customize it to your liking, open the Manage publication menu, click on Info & Homepage, and then go to the Homepage tab.
Header
Your publication header can be customized with the following items:
- Optional subtitle: A brief text that appears below your publication title. It is only visible on the publication homepage.
- Background image: An image placed below the publication title. We recommend uploading an image at least 1500px wide with an ideal aspect ratio of 8:1. You can also adjust the image's focal point for automatic cropping. To do that, click on Background image, then click on the image to set the focus.
- Custom accent color: Set an RGB color code to customize the call-to-actions, highlights, and top bar in your Medium publication. Click the circle next to Color and enter a six-digit hex color code (without the # sign).
If you want to change the title and the avatar, you can do that in the Info tab.
The header also includes the publication navigation. Learn more about the navigation in this article.
Sections
Publication homepages are based on sections. You can add as many sections to your publication and customize how many stories they should contain and how they should behave.
To create a new section, click the Add section button.
You can choose between different types of sections. Click the down arrow next to Section to change the source of the stories.
- Latest stories: stories recently added to the publication (note: this is not necessarily the story's original publish date).
- Editor's picks: choose specific stories to feature.
- Stories in a topic: stories with a specific topic.
- Promo: a custom call to action. More on this later.
After that, you can choose how many stories appear in a section using the - or + controls. You can add up to 25 stories per section.
You can also choose how the stories are shown. To change the display mode, click one of the options on the toolbar.
-
Grid: Stories appear as cards with up to three per row.
• This mode has two additional options: one to decide whether the title is above or below the image, and another to hide or show the margins between stories. - Stream: Stories are displayed as a list, with the image on top.
- List: Stories are also shown as a list, but in a more compact format.
And finally, each section can have an optional title.
Homepage promo
Homepage promos are a special type of section that enables you to add custom blocks to your publication that link your readers to a story, a subpage, or anywhere else on the web.
Promos can feature an image, text, or button, along with a custom background color. Whatever combination of elements you select, it will display as a clickable link to your specified URL.
Uploaded images are shown with a maximum height of 175px or a maximum width of 600px. PNG files with transparency work well here.
You can use as many promo blocks as you like on your homepage.
Delete publication
- On your publication settings page, click Advanced.
- Delete publication from the drop-down menu.
Deleting a publication will not automatically delete any stories in that publication.
Note: Only the publication owner can delete the publication.
FAQ
When a user is removed from a publication:
- If they were a publication editor, they will no longer be able to access any publication settings, manage submissions, or submit their own stories to the publication (see table above). If they were a publication writer, they will no longer be able to submit new stories to the publication.
- Their stories published in the publication will still be submitted in the publication. Both the story author as well as publication editors can remove those submissions from the publication at any time.
