As a Partner Program writer, you can choose whether each story earns money on a per-story basis. When a story is made eligible to earn, it is placed behind the paywall and becomes accessible only to Medium members.
You need to be enrolled in the Medium Partner Program to use this feature. See Medium Partner Program: Application and enrollment for more details.
You can set the paywall to be enabled or disabled by default for all new stories in your Publishing settings. The steps below let you manage the paywall setting for individual stories.
Publishing a new story behind the paywall
- Once you’re done writing, click Publish.
- Make sure the Paywall your story checkbox is selected.
- Click Publish now.
- Once you’re done writing your story, tap Next.
- Enable the Members only toggle.
- Tap Publish now.
Making a published story eligible to earn
- Go to your story page, click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select Edit story.
- In edit mode, click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner again.
- From the dropdown, select Manage paywall setting.
- Choose the option to make the story eligible to earn.
- Click Save.
- Go to your story page, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select Edit.
- In edit mode, tap Next in the top-right corner to open the story settings.
- Enable the Members only toggle.
- Tap Publish to save your changes.
Once your stories are behind the paywall, they will begin accruing earnings based on member activity: reading, listening, claps, highlights, and replies. For more details, see How Medium calculates earnings. You can track your earnings in your Partner Program dashboard.
