Once you join the Medium Partner Program, you can make your stories eligible to earn money.
Publishing a story for members
- When you’re writing a story, click the drop-down menu at the top of the editor.
- Select Yes underneath “Would you like to make this story eligible to earn money?” (If you want to change this setting for a story that’s already published, just click Edit, change your selection on the drop-down.)
- Click Publish to save your changes.
That’s it! You’ll automatically be paid every month based on reading time and applause from members, and you can track your progress every week in your Partner Dashboard.
Note: You can only set a story as a members-only story on desktop.
How do my stories earn money?
Currently, Partner Program writers are paid every month based on how members engage with stories. Some factors include reading time (how long members spend reading a story) and applause (how much members clap). Each member’s $5/month subscription is distributed proportionally to the stories that the individual member engaged with that month. So if someone engaged with 10 stories in a given month, their monthly subscription would be distributed to those authors only.
How does applause work?
Clapping is a way readers can show appreciation for a Medium story and recommend it to their followers. The more they like something, the more they can clap. Clapping plays a role in determining how much you can earn per story. When members clap for a story, a portion of their $5 monthly membership will be paid to the author. Learn more about clapping
Will choosing to earn money on a story limit my audience?
When you publish on Medium, we want your ideas to spread. When you set a story to be eligible for payment, everyone can still read your work, including:
- All subscribing members, as part of their membership plan.
- Non-members, who can read a select number of free stories every month. That way, you’ll still be paid based on how members engage with your work, and more people can get a taste of the smart thinking and quality writing you put out there.
What happens when I share my story on social media?
The more you share, the more your story spreads. Medium readers who aren’t subscribers yet can read a select number of free stories every month.
Can I earn money for my stories when they’re in a publication?
Yes! You can set your story to be eligible to earn money and also include it in a Medium publication. You will earn money through the Partner Program like usual and receive all of the earnings.
Do I still need to promote stories that earn money on social media?
Sure! Remember, all subscribing Medium members (and readers with access to a select number of free stories every month) can read your work no matter how they find it. Promoting your stories on social media can help you find more readers.
If I become a member, will my posts perform better on Medium?
No. Being a Medium member doesn’t influence how any work is published or featured through the Partner Program.
Is there a monthly limit on how many stories can earn money?
No, you can earn money from anything you publish. Let your imagination run wild.
Can I earn money from previously published stories?
Yes —you can edit a post directly in the editor to earn money from any previously published story, but previous member engagement won’t count towards your earnings.
Are Series eligible to earn money with the Partner Program?
Unfortunately, Series aren’t currently eligible to earn money.
