Medium Partner Program FAQ

What's changing?

Medium is excited to announce its Medium Partner Program where creators can now earn financial compensation by including their stories in Medium’s member exclusive content.

Writers in the Partner Program will be paid monthly, based on the engagement their stories get from paid Medium members. Payments are calculated by dividing up each member’s monthly fee based on their engagement with the member-exclusive stories they read.

How can I participate as a creator?

To launch the new Partner Program, we have invited a small initial group of writers and publishers. We will send out more invitations on a rolling basis over the coming weeks.

Sign up for our wait list here.

Can I still write for free?

Yes. You can still write and share public posts as you would normally on Medium. And anyone can still view your unlocked posts. If you are not interested in making money from your work, nothing changes.

Do I have to be a paid member to participate in the Partner Program?

No, you do not need to be a member. Currently, the Partner Program is invite-only, but we will be rolling it out more broadly in the near future.

How can I get an invitation?

You can sign up for an invitation as the program grows here.

How many posts can I lock per month?

Creators can lock as many posts as they want. There is no limit.

Can I lock previously published posts?

Yes. You can also lock or unlock your posts at any time.

Can Series be locked as member content?

Series are not currently eligible to be locked and monetized.

Will locking my stories limit my audience or distribution?

Medium’s paywall is metered, which means any logged-in user can read up to three member-exclusive stories per month without paying. Therefore, the majority of your Medium followers will likely still be able to read whatever you lock. After reading three members posts, non-members will no longer be able to access those stories.

What happens when locked posts are shared on social media?

You can share a link to a locked member post on social media as you would any other post. Medium users who are not yet Medium members will be able to read up to three locked posts per month, before being asked to become a Medium member.

Will I still need to promote my locked posts on social media?

Member posts travel through the Medium network just like any other story, so you should continue to promote them in your normal way.

If I become a member, will my posts perform better on Medium?

Being a Medium member does not influence how the stories you choose to publish are surfaced or discovered on Medium.

How is payment calculated?

You will be paid based on the engagement your post gets from Medium members. The primary metric is claps, though other factors may be considered. (Only claps that you receive while the post is locked count towards payment.)

Payment is calculated based on the engagement share per member. So, each member’s fee is distributed according to the content they engage with.

How do claps work?

Claps 👏 are a new way to show your support for a Medium post and the author, and recommend it to your followers. The more you like something you read on Medium, the more you can clap for it.

For members, claps have additional value. They are the major factor that  determines what share of your monthly membership fee will go to that author.

What are the requirements for receiving payouts?

We use Stripe.com to process payments. If you register as an individual, you will need a US bank account to receive payments from the Partner Program. If you sign up as a business, you must be in one of the countries the Stripe service supports. (see “Availability” section)

Do you support PayPal?

We do not currently support PayPal, sorry.

When are payments made?

Medium will send you payment via Stripe for any revenues accrued during a given calendar month after the end of that month.

Who is responsible for taxes?

If required by law, you are responsible for reporting and paying any applicable taxes in connection with your participation in the Partner Program.

Are there limits on what I can publish under this program?

Yes. In order to ensure a great member experience, there are stricter rules for what content can be marked member-exclusive. Please see the Partner Program Terms here, and the participation Guidelines here.

What about publications?

A select group of Medium publications have been invited to participate in the Partner Program to start. This means that these publications will be able to lock posts and receive payment for engagement on those posts.

What happens when a publication locks a post?

The owner of a Medium publication has the ability to lock posts in that publication. The publication owner account will receive revenue related to any locked post in the publication. It is the responsibility of publication owners to ensure they have appropriate permissions from authors to lock posts, and have agreements in place for paying writers where appropriate.

The user account that posted the post will not have control over locking or unlocking a post and will not receive revenue from it directly from Medium. However, the user account that posted the post can remove the post from the publication, which will unlock the post.

Can my publication participate?

Currently publications are included in the Partner Program on an invite-only basis. To sign up for an invitation when they become available, please go here and include a link to your publication.
