Medium Partner Program FAQ

Medium is excited to announce its Medium Partner Program, where creators can now earn money for their stories.

Writers in the Partner Program will be paid monthly, based on the engagement their stories get from Medium members (who pay $5/month). Payments are calculated by dividing up each member’s monthly fee based on their engagement with the stories they read.

How can I participate as a creator?

Sign up here.

Can I still write for free?

Yes. You can still write and share public posts as you would normally on Medium. And anyone can still view your public posts. If you are not interested in making money from your work, nothing changes.

Do I have to be a paid member to participate in the Partner Program?

No, you do not need to be a member.

How can I get an invitation?

The Partner Program is now open to everyone. You can sign up here.

How many stories for members can I write per month?

Creators can write as many stories for members as they want. There is no limit.

Can I make previously published posts into member posts?

Can Series be set as member content?

Series are not currently eligible to be monetized for members.

Will setting my story for members limit my audience or distribution?

Medium's open paywall features a meter for readers who aren’t members yet. We allow non-members to access three paywalled stories for free each month, so your ideas as an author can reach more people and readers can get a taste of the smart, in-depth analysis that’s available to members.

What happens when member posts are shared on social media?

You can share a link to a member post on social media as you would any other post. Medium users who are not yet Medium members will be able to read up to three member posts per month, before being asked to become a Medium member.

Will I still need to promote my member posts on social media?

Member posts travel through the Medium network just like any other story, so you should continue to promote them in your normal way.

If I become a member, will my posts perform better on Medium?

Being a Medium member does not influence how the stories you choose to publish are surfaced or discovered on Medium.

How is payment calculated?

You will be paid based on the engagement your post gets from Medium members. The primary metrics are claps and reading time, though other factors may be considered. (Only claps that you receive while the post is set for members count towards payment.)

Payment is calculated based on the engagement share per member. So, each member’s fee is distributed according to the content they engage with.

How do claps work?

Claps 👏 are a new way to show your support for a Medium post and the author, and recommend it to your followers. The more you like something you read on Medium, the more you can clap for it.

For members, claps have additional value. They are the major factor that  determines what share of your monthly membership fee will go to that author.

What are the requirements for receiving payouts?

We use to process payments. If you register as an individual, you will need a US bank account to receive payments from the Partner Program. If you sign up as a business, you must be in one of the countries the Stripe service supports. (see “Availability” section)

Do you support PayPal?

We do not currently support PayPal, sorry.

When are payments made?

Medium will send you payment via Stripe for any revenues accrued during a given calendar month after the end of that month.

Who is responsible for taxes?

If required by law, you are responsible for reporting and paying any applicable taxes in connection with your participation in the Partner Program.

Are there limits on what I can publish under this program?

Yes. In order to ensure a great member experience, there are stricter rules for what content can be marked member-exclusive. Please see the Partner Program Terms here, and the participation Guidelines here.

What about publications?

A select group of Medium publications have been invited to participate in the Partner Program to start. This means that these publications will be able to set posts for members and receive payment for engagement on those posts.

 Can my publication participate?

Currently, we're not adding publications to the Partner Program.
