Users are required to either own the rights or have permission to post the content they publish on Medium.
Medium defines plagiarism as:
- Presenting or using someone else's words or ideas as your own, without proper credit, acknowledgement, or permission.
- Copying ideas and/or text directly from other sources, whether whole articles, paragraphs, or sentences.
- Slightly rewriting or paraphrasing someone else's work (often called "mosaic plagiarism").
- Translating or otherwise reproducing a source from one language to another without authorization, or “spinning” a source by translating from one language to another.
- Using artificial intelligence tools to rephrase, summarize, remix, or otherwise modify existing content in a manner that results in a derivative work which closely resembles the original content in concept, structure, or essential elements.
Please note that crediting a source does not supplant the need to secure permissions, and deletion of copyright infringement is not a basis for account reinstatement.
Users found in violation of our copyright and plagiarism rules will be suspended, and are not eligible for warning, appeal, or restoration. Deletion of copyright violations is not grounds for reinstatement.
DMCA/Copyright Complaints
Medium deals with claims of copyright violation in accordance with the DMCA. To submit a DMCA claim, you must be the rights holder, or their authorized representative. Our DMCA & Copyright Policy contains additional information on filing a claim.
Fair Use
While Medium is not able to provide specific legal advice on this matter, we recommend reading the EFF's article on Fair Use.
