Whether a portion of your earnings is withheld for US taxes depends on the tax form you submitted when enrolling in the Partner Program.
US taxpayers (W-9)
If you submitted a W-9, no earnings will be withheld. The amount shown in your dashboard is the amount you will receive. If you earn over $10 in a calendar year, you will receive a 1099-MISC form to use when filing your taxes. Any taxes owed to the US are paid at that time.
Nonresident aliens (W-8)
If you submitted a W-8, Medium will withhold royalty taxes and remit them to the US government on your behalf. The withholding rate is determined by the country you declared on your W-8 form and any tax treaty benefits you have claimed.
If you earn over $0.50 in a calendar year, you will receive a 1042-S form summarizing your earnings and any taxes withheld. In most cases, you will not need to take any further action for US taxes. You can also use this form when filing taxes in your country of residence.
To reduce your withholding rate, you may be eligible to claim treaty benefits on your W-8 form. See TIN and tax treaty benefits for nonresident aliens for details.
