Why do I keep getting signed out?

Users have reported getting a "signed out" notice even though they are still signed in. This is connected with the fact that they've disabled 3rd party cookies in their browser, and this is causing problems while viewing any publication with a custom domain here on Medium.

Beyond the pages shown on Medium.com, there are many custom domains on the Medium network (such as theringer.com or thinkprogress.org) that require setting specific cookies for those domains.

To use all of the Medium services while visiting custom domain publications on Medium, you MUST accept the cookies from medium.com and any custom domain on Medium as well.

For Google Chrome:

Please take a look at this article to learn how to manage cookies for Chrome.

  • Select the Chrome menu icon Chrome menu.
  • Select Settings.
  • Near the bottom of the page, select Show advanced settings.
  • In the "Privacy" section, select Content settings.
  • In the "Cookies" section, click the "Manage exceptions" button.
  • Enter "[*.]medium.com" in the "Hostname pattern" field.
  • Select Done.

For Firefox:

Please refer to this article on how to manage cookies of Firefox.

  • On the menu bar, click on the Firefox menu and select Preferences.
  • Select the Privacy panel.
  • Set Firefox will: Use custom settings for history.
  • Check mark Accept cookies from sites to enable cookies.

If you're using another browser, please refer to your browser's support pages.

If you continue to receive the error on Firefox:

  • On the menu bar, click on the Firefox menu and select Preferences.
  • Select the Privacy panel.
  • Set Firefox will: Use custom settings for history.
  • Search for all cookies related to the custom domain you are trying to visit and delete them.
  • Reload the Medium page and try again.
