Import post

If you have a story published elsewhere and would like to import it to Medium, you can use this handy import tool. Using the import tool will automatically backdate the post to the original date, as well as add a canonical link to make sure your SEO won't be penalized.

Note: Import tool is currently supported only on desktop.

Importing a post

  1. Click on your avatar image in the top-right corner of the page and click Stories.
  2. Click Import a story.
  3. Paste the URL of the story you'd like to import into the field and click Import.
  4. Click See your story.
  5. Edit your post and click Publish to publish it on your profile.

Imported stories will automatically apply a canonical URL referencing the original source material.

Note: You may only import content from other sites for which you have the right to do so.

Troubleshooting

Why can't my story be imported?

Medium uses a third-party service to handle the technical side of importing a single story to Medium. We send a request to their API with the URL to be imported, and they return the contents of the URL to the best of their ability.

If the import tool is not able to interpret the page, you may see a blank page when you try to import. If that occurs, you would need to copy/paste your content into a new draft and publish.

If you need to backdate a post or add a canonical URL, send us an email with the details.
