Medium Memberships: FAQ for Members

As a member of a Medium publication, a monthly fee will allow you access to members-only stories. Publishers set a membership price and “lock” certain stories, creating premium content available only to paying members.

How much does membership cost?

Membership fees are determined by the publisher, and vary by publication. 

Who processes and stores my credit card?

We work with Stripe.com to securely process credit card payments. Stripe processes billions of dollars in payments every year, and your information will be secure. Learn more about Stripe’s security policies.

How will the charge appear on my credit card?

It will appear as the name of the publication to which you are subscribing. 

Why did I receive extra $1 charges on my credit card?

The first time you become a member of a publication on Medium, Stripe makes a temporary authorization of $1 to verify the validity of the card. There is a potential for another $1 authorization when your association to the publication is made. Both of these authorizations will be credited back to you, and not charged.

How does the billing cycle work?

Membership fees are charged monthly on a recurring basis, always on the same day of the month as when you originally signed up.

How do I cancel my membership?

Billing is immediate, and you can cancel your membership at any time from your publication management page. There are no refunds for monthly memberships already charged. And there is no partial or pro-rated refunding, so your membership will automatically expire at the end of the billing cycle. You will still be able to read members-only stories until the end of the billing cycle.

Do I need to have a Medium account to become a member of a publication?

Yes, membership requires creating a Medium account. 

What percentage of membership payments does the publisher receive?

Publishers may set a fixed price for memberships, or may allow members to set their own price.

For publishers who set a price, publishers will only pay fees for payment processing on the first 500 members. For subsequent members, they will pay a flat rate of 20 percent. 

For publishers who allow readers to set the price, the publisher pays only for payment processing.

Can I set up a membership for my publication?

We’re initially launching the membership program with a small group of partners. We will be opening this feature up wider in the near future. Learn more about membership for publishers. 

How do I dispute a charge?

There are no refunds, and billing is immediate. All disputes and other requests should be made to the publication directly via the contact information on that publication's homepage.
